YouTube Premium downloads versus a video file you keep
Yes. YouTube Premium adds a Download button under videos in the YouTube app on phones and tablets, and at youtube.com in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera, but what it saves is an encrypted copy that plays only inside YouTube, on the account that downloaded it, while the membership is active. It is not a video file you can open in another player, edit, move or send to anyone. If you want an MP4 or an MP3 that is yours to keep, that is a different job, and it needs no subscription.
What a Premium download actually is
A Premium download is an offline copy held inside YouTube, not a file in your Downloads folder. YouTube's help says it plainly: downloaded videos are stored encrypted on the device and can only be watched in the YouTube app. That is why they never appear in your gallery, your camera roll or the Files app, and why there is nothing to drag into an editor.
Getting one takes a few taps, and the menu names are the same on Android and iPhone:
- Sign in to your Premium account in the YouTube app, open the video and tap Download below the player. The icon turns black when it has finished.
- To find it later, tap your profile picture, then the Downloaded filter at the top of your Library, then the Downloads playlist.
- On a computer, sign in at youtube.com, open the video and click Download below it. Saved videos are under Downloads in the left menu.
- To set a default quality, go to Settings, then Background & downloads, then Download quality. On a computer the path is Settings, Downloads, Download quality.
Where Premium downloads are stored
They sit, encrypted, on the device that downloaded them. On Android you can turn on Use SD card under Settings, then Background & downloads, so new downloads go to the card. YouTube's help adds that there is no way to move videos you have already downloaded between internal storage and the card: you delete them and download again.
YouTube's help lists neither the quality options nor a maximum. It says only that higher settings use more data, take longer to appear and fill more space, so the menu on your own device is the only reliable answer.
The rules a Premium download lives under
A Premium download keeps playing only while you reconnect regularly, stay signed in to the same account and keep the membership active. YouTube's help centre sets out the conditions:
- Reconnect every 29 days. Downloads play offline for up to 29 days, then the device has to go online so the app can check the video. In some countries the window is only 48 hours.
- Removed with the original. If a video is no longer available for offline playback when you reconnect, it is deleted from your device at the next sync.
- Ten devices at once. Downloading on an eleventh device de-authorises the oldest, and you can do that 4 times a year. Deleting and reinstalling the YouTube app counts as a new device.
- Membership ends, access ends. If Premium lapses you lose access to your downloads until you subscribe again. Pausing instead, for 1 to 6 months, keeps them on the device but locked until you resume. Annual plans and Apple billing cannot be paused.
- Travel. In a country where Premium is not offered, videos downloaded before the trip stay available offline for 30 days.
Premium download versus an MP4 file, side by side
Both get a video onto your device for watching without a connection, and they differ on almost every other point. The general case for holding a file instead of an in-app copy, and what to pack before a flight, is in the guide to watching offline.
| Premium download | MP4 from this site | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it plays | Only in the YouTube app, or at youtube.com on a computer | Any video player on any device |
| Account | The Premium account that downloaded it | None, at any point |
| How long it lasts | Up to 29 days offline at a time, and only while you pay | Until you delete it |
| If the video is taken down | Removed at the next sync | Your copy is unaffected |
| Quality | Your Download quality setting, no published maximum | Up to 2160p when the uploader published it |
| Edit, trim, move, send | No | Yes, it is an ordinary file |
| Sound only | Not from the YouTube app | MP3 or M4A |
| Playlists | Whole playlists, plus Smart downloads | No, one video per link |
| Cost | A monthly membership, priced by country | Free |
When Premium is the better choice
Premium is the better pick when you want a lot of video offline with nothing to manage, and when you would rather stay inside what YouTube itself permits. Its terms forbid downloading content unless the service expressly authorises it or YouTube and the rights holder have given written permission, and the Premium Download button is that authorisation. Keeping a copy versus republishing one is a separate question, covered in the guide to whether downloading is legal.
It also handles volume that a file workflow does not. You can download a whole playlist, and if you have watched from it in the last 30 days, new videos added to it download on their own. Smart downloads goes further and adds recommended videos for you (on Android it swaps them for new ones every seven days). Clearing space is one setting: Background & downloads, then Delete downloads.
Music is the other strong case. Premium includes YouTube Music Premium, where songs, albums and playlists download inside the YouTube Music app and stay available as long as you reconnect once every 30 days. If you want tracks as files you can keep in your own library, the guide to getting music out of YouTube covers that job.
Premium Lite and free downloads in some countries
Premium Lite, the cheaper tier, includes downloads for most videos but not for Shorts or music content, and YouTube counts covers and vlogs with a partner's song in the background as music. Lite does not include YouTube Music Premium either.
In a list of countries that includes India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Nigeria and Egypt, the YouTube app lets you download certain videos without any membership. Those copies play for 48 hours before the phone must reconnect, and in India and South Africa some videos still ask for Premium.
How to download a YouTube video without Premium
Paste the video's link into the YouTube downloader on this site, choose a format, and an MP4, MP3 or M4A file arrives in your browser's downloads, with no account and no subscription. Nothing is installed, so it works the same in any browser.
- In YouTube, tap Share under the video and choose Copy link.
- Paste the link into the box on the YouTube downloader page.
- Pick MP4 and a resolution, up to 2160p when the uploader published one, or MP3 or M4A for sound only.
- Save the file. It is named after the video, and it plays in whatever your device already uses for video or music.
What it will not do
It takes one video per link, so there are no playlists or channels. It cannot reach anything that needs a signed in session: private, members-only and age restricted videos stay out of reach, and having Premium changes nothing, because the site never asks for an account.
Where the file lands depends on the device. The walkthrough for a Windows PC, laptop or Chromebook covers the desktop side. On an iPhone the file goes to the Files app first, and the iPhone and Android guide shows the extra step to Photos. For a lecture or a mix you only want to hear, the MP3 converter skips the video stream entirely, which a Premium download in the YouTube app cannot do.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download with Premium in Safari on a Mac?
YouTube's help names Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera as the browsers that can download on a computer, and says it hopes to add others later. Safari is not on that list. A file from this site downloads in Safari like any other download.
Can I move a Premium download to another phone or my computer?
No. YouTube says downloads are specific to each device and are not transferred, even on the same account. You download the video again on the new device, which then counts toward the 10 device limit.
What happens to my downloads if I cancel Premium?
They keep working until the end of the billing period you have paid for, then stop. If you subscribe again, YouTube says saved videos can take a few hours to reappear.
Why is there no Download button on some videos?
YouTube marks some videos as unavailable for offline playback, and on those the button is missing. Its help does not give the reason for any individual video.
Can YouTube give me an MP4 of my own uploads?
Yes. In YouTube Studio, open Content, then the menu next to a video, and choose Download for an MP4 at 720p or 360p, depending on the video. You can do this up to five times per video in 24 hours.
